We extend a warm welcome to all individuals who have a passion for their local history and a strong sense of community. We also highly encourage our current and past members to re-establish connections with us.

Membership benefits

By becoming a member of the historical society, you will contribute to our efforts in promoting the recognition of our rich cultural heritage, initiating historical research, and safeguarding a remarkable collection of objects, photographs, memorabilia, documents, and recorded history from Williamstown, Newport, and Spotswood.


As a valued member, you will have the privilege of:

  • Receiving our informative newsletter regularly (bi-monthly)
  • Access to our extensive archives, to conduct your own research
  • Receiving a discounted members rate for any research undertaken for you
  • Take part in our regular events featuring guest speakers who share their knowledge on various topics related to local history.


History presentations are held bi-monthly on the fourth Thursday of the month during January, March, May, July, September and November. See our news and events for the latest details.

Membership fees 2024/25

Annual membership fees

Single membership  $20.00

Family membership $30.00

(2 adults & children residing at the same address)


Annual memberships are due on 1st July each year and can be paid by direct deposit or cheque.

Please note:  Effective from 1 July 2024 there will be an additional  $10 printing and postage fee ONLY for those members who require their newsletter to be posted to them.

This will be followed by supper at the Pirates Tavern

In 1867 Steedman published the ‘Manual of Swimming’, drawing on his extensive personal swimming experience to provide a practical manual. This comprehensive manual provided early descriptions of racing strokes, and training methods, and contributed significantly to the development of 'speed swimming', diving, water safety, and the health benefits of bathing.
